Letter, Susan B. Anthony to Albert F. Dickinson

Document

A letter from Susan B. Anthony to her cousin, Albert F. Dickinson. Anthony tells Dickinson that Mr. Plunkett, of the town of Adams, thinks it is a good idea to turn their grandfather’s old home into a park for the village. She tells him she believes it is better to give the land to the village than to the Berkshire County Historical Society and asks him to let her know how he and his sister Hannah would like to proceed.

Letter, Susan B. Anthony to Albert F. Dickinson

[Letterhead: National-American Woman Suffrage Association]
Rochester, N.Y., March, 16th, 1899.
Mr. Albert Dickinson
Chicago, Ill.
My dear cousin:
Enclosed is a letter from Mr. Plunkett relative to the old
Anthony homestead at Adams. Will you please pass it over to your sister Hannah
so that you both may see that Mr. Plunkett considers it would be a good thing
for the town of Adams to accept the present of the old house and old acres, to be
kept as a park or breathing place for the people of that village.
I did not go to Adams while at the East, because Hannah was not able to
send me an exact statement of the conditions on which you would deed the place
to the trustees of the village. To my mind it will be vastly better for you to
present it to the village than to the County Historical Society. The village is
likely soon to be without any public park, as the Plunketts are selling build-
-ing lots from their park in the West part of the town. I shall be going East
again the last part of May, and if you and Hannah can put upon paper your wishes
and also have the deed ready to be transferred to the village trustees,
I will then if you wish go to Adams and attend to the business in whatsoever manner you shall direct.
It is evident from this letter that Mr. Plunkett is desirous that
the village trustees shall accept the gift, so if you and Hannah wish thus to
dispose of you dear mothers old homestead, let me know at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Susan B. Anthony
