Letter, Susan B. Anthony to Anna Dann Mason
A letter from Susan B. Anthony to her housekeeper and secretary, Anna Dann Mason. Susan sends Anna a check for her work during the month of October and apologizes for being unable to provide steady employment while she has been out of town. Susan reports that Ida Husted Harper will be arriving in Rochester in November to begin work on the third volume of the collection, The History of Woman Suffrage. She updates Anna on her travel plans for the following week.

Dear Anna
Here is check for
the month of October – I know
it has been hard work for you
not to have steady work all the
weeks that I have been away – but
it can’t be helped – I couldn’t let
you go for all time – because of
my going – so you must be
content with doing everything
you can to help sister Mary – It
seems to me she might have some
winter fixings to do – but the time
is now very short to my coming

home – and Mrs Harper will
be there the 3d of November – and
we shall all be set at work
with no let up – intil vol. III
is done & out of the hands of
the printer – – I shall not be
at home until after the Con at Oswego –
– I go into Providence tomorrow to the annual
meeting – stay all night – then come back
here Friday A.M. – to sit that day & Saturday
– and go into Mrs. Stanton’s Saturday
night – on the boat – or if it is windy
– into Providence Sat. afternoon & into New York
Sunday A.M. – I wish I had a program
to see when I was announced to speak
– if I was not until Wednesday night – I
wouldn’t hurry to go on Tuesday – So
do the best you can – until I come.
Then there will be plenty of work &
full hours! – I am glad you are studying
Emerson – I want you should show
Mr Gannett that you understand him –
and can ask intelligent questions – as well
as Mr Mason – you must not let him
get ahead of you – Sincerely yours
Susan B. Anthony
