An illustration showing the first Erie Canal aqueduct over the Genesee River, completed in 1823. Made out of sandstone, this structure deteriorated over time. It was replaced with a second aqueduct in 1842. Made out of limestone, the second aqueduct still stands today and serves as the base of the Broad Street Bridge. The view depicted here faces east.
