Picture

A view of the Erie Canal in winter, looking east towards the Plymouth Avenue Bridge in downtown Rochester, NY. Canal boats are docked along the north side of the icy canal. The tall building on the far left is the Rochester Hotel, which opened in 1908 at the southeast corner of Plymouth and W. Main Street. The bell tower of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the tall steeple of Rochester’s Old City Hall can be seen a bit farther off. To the right are the backs of buildings belonging to Rochester Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute, which later became the Rochester Institute of Technology. The statue of Mercury crowns the smokestack of the William S. Kimball Company in the distance.
