Emedina Howe Kavanaugh was born in 1954 and raised in Dunkirk, NY, by her Puerto Rican parents. She moved to Rochester, NY, with her husband and two sons and opened an in-home child care business, from which she is now semi-retired.

In this interview, Emedina Howe Kavanaugh discusses her family history, her upbringing in Dunkirk, and some of her early struggles in school due to being bilingual. She explains what it was like to visit Puerto Rico for the first time with her mother, the importance of food and music in her upbringing, and the Latino community she found in Rochester. She also discusses her understanding of being Puerto Rican and Latina and her work in child care.
