TO: The Members of the Armed Services
and Their Families

We have learned that you have become a member of the armed forces of the
United States and we want you to know that should the need arise the American
Red Cross is ready and greatly interested in being of any possible service to
you and the members of your family. This service is without cost to you or
to them.

As you may know, the Red Cross has been designated by the Congress of the
United States to serve as the link between the men and women of the armed forces
and their families in peace and in war. Funds to carry out this work are pro-
vided by the patriotic and generous citizens and neighbors, probably including
you and your family, who contribute annually to the American Red Cross campaign.

May we therefore, take this opportunity to indicate some of the Red
Cross services which you and your family may have occasion to use during
and following your period of military service? You will find such a list
attached to this letter for your convenience and information. If you have
problems for which services are not listed, please feel free to call upon
us for we may be able to help with them.

And, as you leave your home to serve our country, we hope you will
remember that you carry with you the deep and heart-felt interest of your
neighbors and fellow citizens whose great concern is for the well-being of
yourself and your family and whose great wish is for your safe and speedy
return.

RED CROSS SERVICES

FOR

MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES AND THEIR FAMILIES

1. Financial Assistance: It can be provided when needed:
A. To your family pending arrival of first family allowance check
from the government.
B. To our family when there is an interruption in receipt of
family allowance.
C. To you as a serviceman, when money is needed for transportation
home in time of emergency (serviceman should contact his Red Cross
Field Director at his station).

Whenever problems of a financial nature arise, other than those mentioned
above, members of your family are invited to visit Red Cross Home Service
to discuss the situation with one of our workers.

2. Emergency Furloughs and Extensions: If, while on active duty, an emergency
occurs requiring your presence at home, your family should contact the Red
Cross Home Service Department. If an emergency extension is needed while you
are on furlough, you, or a responsible member of your family are likewise
advised to call this office.

The Commanding Officer of the serviceman decides whether the furlough or
furlough extension can be granted; the Red Cross verifies the need.

3. Home Conditions and Welfare Reports: If, while on active duty, you become
worried or anxious about members of your family, consult the Red Cross Field
Director serving your area of duty. The members of your family are invited
to apply to the Red Cross Home Service office whenever they become concerned
about your welfare.

4. Consultation, Guidance and Referral: Our workers are experienced in helping
families of servicemen with problems arising because of the serviceman’s
absence. Families will be informed of and assisted in the utilization of
other available community resources. You may likewise receive advice and
counsel regarding personal or family problems while on duty by applying to
your Red Cross Field Director.

5. Dependency Discharge: If at any time you believe that you are eligible to
apply for discharge for reasons of hardship or dependency, we suggest that
you have a responsible member of your family call your Red Cross Home Service
office for advice on procedures.

Again, please remember that only the proper military authorities can make
the discharge decision.

6. Services to Veterans: Upon your discharge from active service your Red
Cross Home Service Department can help you and your family in the preparation
of claims for disability compensation, back pay, government insurance,
hospitalization and other claims involving government benefits in addition
to consultation and guidance regarding other personal or family problems.

Your Red Cross Home Service Department is located at 276 Clinton Ave. South;
telephone Hamilton 6100. Office hours are from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. daily
and Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon. We also have all night and
weekend coverage for any emergency that may arise after office hours. The
representative for this service also may be reached by calling Hamilton 6100.

In case anything SERIOUS happens at
home and you need me there, you can
help me secure emergency leave by
following these instructions:
1. Send me a telegram telling why I
am needed.
2. VISIT THE LOCAL CHAPTER OF THE
RED CROSS. Explain the emergency to
the chapter so that they can inform
the field director here. He will
notify my commanding officer.

Understand, the RED CROSS DOES NOT
GIVE EMERGENCY LEAVES. ONLY MY
COMMANDING OFFICER CAN but the RED
CROSS CAN HELP us by speeding the
necessary information to him.

place.
