Dear Anna
Here we are in
the far away Scotland – we
took carriages this forenoon &
this afternoon, with a driver
who could tell us all about
the wonderful places we passed,
& thus spent the day – Tomorrow
we expect to start early for
Melrose a few miles distant,
visit a castle & an Abbey,
[page 2]
notwithstanding it will be
Sunday & we will not be
able to see the inside
of either, getting back to this
Hotel at 9:20 in the evening, &
leaving the next morning, Monday
at 10.50 getting into London
in the evening, having Tuesday
& Wednesday to go about, & pack
our things ready to take steamer
Thursday, the 20th for New York, & not
one of us but rejoices in the
fact. Now if you are only
as tired of visiting & roaming
about, and as glad to get back
to 17 – Madison St. we shall
all be agreed – I did think
I would stop in New York
[page 3]
& Philadelphia to visit niece
Louise & the cousins – If I do,
it need make no difference
about your being at 17 soon
as you feel disposed, and get
the dust cleared from my
study & the parlor first,
then if I decide to go home
direct I can go right to
work – If I do stop, be
sure & get Miss Maria to
stay with you nights –
It is not best for you
to be in the house alone –
You know to whom to
go to get the water &
gas turned on all right,
& get the bill & I will
[page 4]
settle it when I come –
If any thing prevents your
being there, send a letter
to Mrs Cook that we may
know what to expect –
We are just off for
London, in about an hour
so I must hurry with
this –
Very truly yours
Mary S. Anthony
