Dear Anna + Maggie
I arrived here yesterday at
1.40 – Mercury at 90⁰ in the shade, after
a week of about 60⁰ or less in Duluth. with
such cold winds that we were hardly comfortable
when out driving, with all the big fur coats and
winter fixings we could muster – so you
see the change was rather sudden –
After a good wash, change of linen, and
leaving off the under rigging, putting on the
thin white skirt, the best silk dress skirt
with the light striped silk waist, I was
ready to go with the others to D.R. Junior’s
to a 6.30 dinner – Broiled quail, new
potatoes, asparagus on toast first course – lettuce,
tomatoes, cucumbers with mayonaise dressing.
for salad – 2d course – Strawberry short
cake with whipped cream, & coffee, 3d course
[page 2]
all very nice indeed, but as always with
me, I should have enjoyed just any one course
full as well, if not better – if one must do
so much in such hot weather, it must, in a
measure detract more or less from the pleasure
of having their friends come to see them –
But we had a very pleasant time, and
this Friday is started in for an equally hot
one but without my under wear & with my
new muslin shirt waist. I shall be comparatively
comfortable – Susan B. will go to Ft Scott this
afternoon, back monday & I now intend to start
for home Tuesday, getting home in time for the
basket-picnic, Thursday the 20th at Mrs Randall’s
the “Warner Castle” place nearly opposite Mt. Hope
entrance – I think I ought to be there, still,
while I am so near my friends. I may decide to
go with Susan B. to Geneva Lake, & so not be
home until the following week – I cannot see
why Nellie should be so summarily dismissed, not
giving her the opportunity to find another place, not
quite a fair proceeding, without some good reason.
However she will have little trouble in finding another
good place & keeping it if she “acts well her part” –
With love to all – Cooks & Favors included
