A letter from William Gleason to the Gleason family. William writes that he left San Francisco nine hours before the earthquake struck. He comments on the reports of the disaster and expresses uncertainty about the rest of his trip since he had originally intended to return to San Francisco.

My dear family
this mor I arived here
this morning, haveing left
an Frisco about 9 hours
before the earth quake. I have
been with Elinor all day
I am going to stop at the
same house with her. the people
here are very excited over
the great calamity, many of
them haveing near relatives
liveing there also business
interests. I hope the reports
are exagerated if true, it is
terrible. I received the letter
written on the 11th I was glad to
have later news from home
I am not decided as to the lenth
of time I wil stay here I may
have to change my plans on

the return as I intended
stopping about 10 days in
and about frisco, but all that
is off. to say that Elinor was
delighted to see me would be
putting it mildly
