The DeLands were a prominent family that owned one of the largest factories in Fairport, NY, in the latter half of the 19th century. They used the Erie Canal to transport baking soda and other products that they manufactured. They also used the canal for recreation, as seen in this picture of them on a leisurely boat ride.
